Difference between "For" and "Since" in terms of Time:

This blog will make you understand the difference between for and since when the time is being taken into consideration.

  • For and its usage:
When the time is being taken into consideration, for can be used in Present Perfect Continuous tense. While conveying something to others, if we do not know the exact time at which it happened, then we use for.

Let me give you some examples for better understanding:

Ex1: I have been waiting for you for 2 hours. (here, we do not know the exact time that we started waiting).

Ex2: These men have been playing cricket for 3 hours. (men started playing cricket 3 hours ago).

Ex3: It has been raining for 2 days.

  • Since and its usage:

When the time is being taken into consideration, since can be used in Present Perfect Continuous tense. While conveying something to others, if we know the exact time at which it happened, then we use since.

Here are some examples given to understand the usage of since:

Ex1: I have been writing this blog since 6:00 am. (here we mentioned the exact time that we started the task).

Ex2: My mother has been purchasing vegetables since 5:00 pm.

Ex3: I have been suffering from fever since Sunday. (here we mentioned the exact day instead of mentioning the number of days).
